What is pregnancy massage?

Did you know remedial massage can be a part of your pregnancy journey? Not only does it help relieve those new aches and pains but can also improve your mental health!!
What is pregnancy massage?
Pregnancy massage consists of a light to medium pressure relaxation treatment that is adapted throughout each stage of your pregnancy. It is aimed to help take pressure off your baby by lengthening the muscles in your neck, chest, hands back, hips, legs, and feet.
Depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy some people are still comfortable lying on their stomach. This is fine however your remedial massage therapist will help accommodate you and make you comfortable before the treatment begins. Most commonly pregnant women prefer to be in a comfortable side-lying position and will be covered with a towel to keep warm. Your bottom leg will be straight with your top leg bent resting on a pillow for added support. Another pillow will be under your head to help you relax. The remedial massage therapist will then begin to work on your problem areas on one side and then turn you over to work on the other side. The best treatment would be at least an hour.
Is pregnancy massage safe?
Pregnancy massage is becoming more and more common in the health industry promoting a lot of great benefits to help ease your 9-month journey. It is very safe when you have an experienced and knowledgeable remedial massage therapist. Lucky at 4 Life physiotherapy we have staff that are!!
We recommended starting pregnancy massage after the first trimester. We also ask that you speak to your GP for advice before beginning pregnancy massage if you have any of the following symptoms:
- Are you in your first trimester
- Have a high-risk pregnancy
- Have a blood clot
- Have morning sickness, vomiting or feeling nauseous
If you are a regular to remedial massage it is important to inform your therapist that you are pregnant even if it is very early so, they can make sure their treatment is safe for you and your baby.
